Learn about ecological organic farming and gardening systems for producing and securing nutrient rich whole delicious foods. Dr. Joseph Heckman, Organic Farmer and Specialist in Soil Fertility will lead an informal walk of his 53 acres of Hunterdon County farmland. Much of the land is in pasture and hay, grown to graze/feed Jersey cattle, goats, and chickens. Garden crops produced include asparagus, sweet potato, Irish potato, cabbage, tomato, watermelon, pumpkin, snapbean, turnip, radish, and lettuce. Orchard crops include pear, paw paw, persimmon, blueberry, June berry, mulberry, walnut, pecan, peach, and apple.
Dr. Heckman will explain and answer questions about soil testing, building soil fertility using organic methods, caring for a small flock of egg layers, establishing an edible landscape/fruiting forest, growing an abundance of vegetables, storing the harvest, and making sauerkraut.
